The James Herty Lucas Visual Materials contains five photographs and three postcards. All the images relate to Georgia Tech and all are sepia-toned. Most of the items date from the time Lucas was a student or new faculty member, ca. 1910-1920. The faculty photograph from 1900 and the "Road Plane" photo from ca. 1927-1934 are the two exceptions.

James Herty Lucas, who was born in Society Hill, South Carolina in 1892, graduated from the Georgia School of Technology with degrees in both Civil and Mechanical Engineering. Soon after his graduation in Mechanical Engineering in 1915, he became Assistant Professor in the new field of Highway Engineering at Georgia Tech.
